The Get Up Kids, Ultimate Fakebook, The Revolvers
@ El Torreon (Kansas City, MO)

February 18th, 2000
Review by Jacque Mocnik

The Revolvers - Click for larger photo. The show started off with the Revolvers, a four piece from KC, MO. The group played songs off their CD - entitled Locket Love - such as "All I Want to Know" and "Torch."

The Revolvers have such intensity, such energy, and yet the lyrics to their songs are almost all brooding and melancholy. It was very interesting to watch this group for the first time. They put on an excellent show and were a complimentary group for the two upcoming bands, Ultimate Fakebook and The Get Up Kids.

If you get a chance find this group’s disc, it's strong and melodic, disguising melancholy with intensity and is a definite must get - especially if you've enjoyed their live show.
Next up were Manhattan’s own rockers, Ultimate Fakebook. As always these three guys got their rock on! Playing crowd favorites "Tell Me What You Want," "She Don’t Even Know My Name," and so many others, the group definitely got the crowd moving. Everyone was dancing and rocking out!! As usual their intensity and energy just filled the room. I always love seeing these guys and have so much fun at their shows!! You simply can't just stand around - you have to move to the beat. Their energy is infectious! They were a great set-up for the  long awaited return of The Get Up Kids. Nick & Eric from UFB - Click for larger photo.
The Get Up Kids - Click for a larger photo. Headlining the bill were Kansas City locals, The Get Up Kids. Reviewing this group was kind of a special moment for me, as it was my "anniversary review." And as fate would have it, it was The Get Up Kids in Lawrence that made for my first review at Synapsis.

I must say, looking back, I enjoyed this El Torreon show so much more.

Maybe it was the energetic crowd response, maybe it was just seeing all five ‘Kids crowded on one tiny little stage and still jumping around and putting their all into it. Who knows?? I do know that I completely and thoroughly enjoyed myself, and from the looks of things, so did everyone else at this show!!
The guys played old favorites like "Amy" and of course new stuff like "Red Letter Day," "Action and Action," and one of my personal favorites, "Mass Pike."

This is the first time in almost two years that the GUK’s have come back and played in KC, likely due to the lack of all-ages venues in the area - a serious issue for a large part of their fan-base in KC.

Tonight, however, the boys definitely rocked it up for their home town, putting all their heart and soul into this performance - making it one of the best I have seen. The crowd definitely seemed to enjoy them. Everyone was dancing and singing along to every song. Now that’s what I call true fans!! And with a sell out crowd in the cavernous El Torreon, you can possibly imagine just how impressive that was.
The Get Up Kids - Click for a larger photo. The Get Up Kids will be heading "down under" to Australia later this year on tour, and I hope those Aussies appreciate these guys as much as we do. If you get the chance to see these guys, do so.

On a final note, all of the bands on this line-up are definitely worth seeing live, and are highly recommended.

And as always, support the local scene!
