Many people have varying degrees of appreciation for
"industry awards," but no one should argue that recognizing and celebrating the
talented individuals and music that make our local scene more enjoyable is a great idea.
So, on April 10, 1999... Synapsis went to the Klammies.
Frankly, seeing all of our favorite rock n' rollers decked
out in fine suits, tuxedos and gowns was worth the cost of admission alone - add the
luxury of the historic Folly Theater, the over-priced drinks and the well-stocked
pressroom, and you've got yourself one fine evening in Kansas City. An odd visual,
perhaps, but you'd be surprised how well leather pants go with a nice jacket, really.
Seriously folks, though many find fault with the politics
of a local music scene, the Klammies take a crack at doing something that no one else is
even trying, and 1999 showed this first-time attendee, and critic, that the Klammies
actually are a fun and worthwhile occasion. Not only did we get to see some great bands
get recognized for their hard work, but we also got to see some excellent performances,
raised some money for a great charity - the Aids Walk - and got to rub shoulders with area
celebrities, movers and shakers. Thanks go out to Jon Niccum and the Pitch for making our attendance possible.
We are happy to share our look at the 1999 Klammy Awards with our readers, and we hope you
enjoy it as much as we did.
