03.16.2001 - Day Overview
Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys, Split Lip Rayfield, Sally Timms, Waco Bros., Murder
City Devils, Ex-Girl, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead
Friday marked the beginning of the free
day shows that featured free beer and free food (are you sensing a pattern here?). Friday also meant it was time for the Bloodshot
Records day show at the Yard Dog folk art gallery on South Congress.
Rex Hobart and the Misery
Boys from Kansas City doled out generous helpings of heartbreak in true
classic country fashion. Split Lip
Rayfield could hardly hear themselves over the cheers of the crowd demanding
they not stop playing. Sally
Timms joined the Waco Brothers for a special treat
at this, the friendliest of all day shows.
Friday evening, however, turned out to be
a total bust as my friend Ammie and I stood outside the Atomic Cafe for about 45 minutes
waiting to see garage-shock heroes the Murder City Devils only
to be turned away by the fire marshal. We
didn't feel so bad though when it turned out that the Devils'
agent and filmmaker Penelope Speers were stuck outside with us. We tried to catch Japan's Ex-Girl
at Red Eye, but were discouraged by the unbelievably thick crowd of people straining to
catch a glimpse of the preceding band ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of
Dead (who ended their set by tossing most of their drum kit through the back
wall and down an embankment into Waller Creek). Once
again, it was off to the oasis of locals at the Ritz.
We knew Saturday was the big day anyway.
