03.14.2001 - Day Overview
Austin Music Awards, Harlow

Well, here it is... what you have all been waiting for - the music! I know all the interactive and film coverage was interesting, but the real stuff of SXSW legend are the bands and the music environment.

Sorry there haven't been more frequent updates, but we had a little setback. Just the hazards of being on the road - Richard got some kind of flu bug and was holed up in the hotel for a couple of days until we could get him healthy.

Because of this we got a slow start on the requested venues at the festival.  But in typical SXSW fashion, if you can't see what you planned, make a new plan!

While Richard got some much needed R&R, Rick spent Wednesday at the Austin Music Awards listening to some great Texas music - from Lucida Williams to Ray Wylie Hubbard, and dozens of other great acts.

HarlowAfter hanging out at the Music Awards for a while, we wandered over (18 blocks) to Stubbs BBQ to hear a kick-ass LA girl band called Harlow. This power rock band played like veterans of the road - with an excelent bass line, pounding drum doublebeats, and incredibly sumptuous vocals.

Perhaps because they were being filmed for VH1's Bands on the Run, they were giving it all they had. Of course, at SXSW, the next dealmaker could very well be in the audience.
